Company Profile

Feather Sensors is a medical instrumentation company with interests in pulmonary medicine.

The company was started through the joint research interests of Robert Coifman, M.D.  and Charles E. Forbes, Ph.D.

Dr. Coifman is a graduate of the Engineering Physics program at Cornell (1960), a board certified practicing allergist and an expert on the use of pulmonary function testing and monitoring to improve control of asthma.  He has three patent applications pending in this field.  In addition to his full time allergy practice Dr. Coifman has research interests in topics ranging from immunotherapy for poison ivy to speech recognition error reduction for dictation into electronic medical records.

Dr. Forbes is a recognized scientist with numerous publications, patents, and presentations.  He obtained his Ph.D. at MIT in 1971 in the field of Inorganic Chemistry.  He has spent the majority of his life working at major R&D centers.  He was awarded two NSF SBIR research grants in 1998 and 1999  while working at Princeton University researching flexible semiconductor electronics on thin film plastic substrates.  Dr. Forbes is very familiar with the commercialization process, has experience working for a  startup, and has international technology transfer experience working with companies such as Hoechst (Germany), Continental Tire ( Germany ), Sumitomo Chemical ( Japan ), and Philips ( Netherlands ).

This joint research effort  from Dr. Forbes and Dr. Coifman has resulted in a novel  inexpensive  prototype based on thin film technology.  The prototype accurately tracks the spirometry curve when tested in series with an expensive calibrated competitor spirometer.
